Publications follow a grid format, commonly
that have been designed specifically for the publication. This can be anything
from a magazine to a newspaper. The grid format allows the publication to be
readable and the entire publication will follow this grid. Using a grid layout
not only gives the publication readability, it can also convey its tone of
voice.
A recent publication that has gone through
a redesign is the Independent newspaper. In 2013 the paper decided to change
its format and go for a much more sophisticated style but still wanted to be
bold and forthright.
This redesign is radical, and striking as
well as being elegant. It gives the Independent an identity.
In this task I experimented with the grid
system and placed tracing paper over a section of the guardian. Following the columns
I drafted a grid on my tracing paper to see what sort of system the guardian
follows. Completing this exercise showed me how important it is to use a grid
system as it makes it structured and professional.
It also showed me that even if the
publication follows a grid it doesn’t always have to stick to every line. But it
still stays clearly formatted and functional.
