OUGD405 - Interim Crit

In an interim crit I discussed the research I had conducted with a feedback group. I discussed how I noticed that many way finding systems were inconsistent and used a variety of styles of typography and symbols. This is where I want to develop a way finding system and ensure that it is consistent. My group gave me feedback on the research I had conducted and we discussed how I could take the project further.

My group suggested I could also look into the application of signage as I found the signs in the Trinity shopping centre unattractive. They recommended I should think about the building and use parts of it such as pillars or the ceiling or the ground. I could then focus on the visual elements around the signage. They liked my idea of making a way finding system consistent and suggested I could focus on an element already a part of the existing system and develop it further.

I am going to design consistent pictograms and appropriate pictograms that suit the environment and ensure that I use consistent typography. I am going to use an element already in an existing way finding system, such as colour or the symbols used, and I am going to develop it further. I am going to look into a different application of the way finding system and design it so it can be applied to more than a simple sign on a wall.

This crit was incredibly useful because I didn't really know what direction I wanted to take with it. Discussing my research and the way I felt about the way the current systems had been designed allowed me to work with my group to determine what outcome I will now work towards.
