A few typefaces seen on canal boats were experimented with, however, of the typefaces being used on canal boats, Clarendon was the most eye catching and bold. Using this typeface, a variety of concepts were developed. The use of detailing and the Stratford Festival logo were experimented with. The colours also seen on canal boats were experimented with as covers.
Because of the cover's connection with Stratford's history, it was decided the cover should be produced traditionally. The book was to be covered with book cloth. Because of this, the colour of the cover depended on the book cloth colours available in the college. Of the colours available, green, red and purple all suited the cover's colour.
Because the college does not have any book cloth printers and the design had to be printed on the book cloth, screen printing was the print method chosen for this brief. This means the final design will have to be split into its respective colours and screen printed onto the book cloth before being hard bound. When produced commercially it will be printed using a book cloth printer.
The full title that was required on the cover was lengthy and distracted from the design a little. From other books I had seen, the concept of a half sleeve helped to create a smaller sleeve that held the sub title. The typeface used in the half sleeve is Gill Sans, another typeface seen on canal boats.
