OUGD505 - Studio Brief 01 - Design

Using the information from the research and the typefaces that are available, a variety of designs were put together. To begin with, the type content was laid out in an order that was most appropriate. From this, using the specific typefaces that will be used to print, a range of ideas were put together on how the final print will look. An image of the trams will be lino printed.

These initial designs focus on the way the information will be laid out. The type has been experimented with in different point sizes and layout. After reviewing these first concepts with a critique group, they preferred the type that was of similar size, as the information was equally important as each other and it would be more legible if the type was at a similar point type.

The information was put into appropriate typefaces using the more legible and bold typefaces for the information and the smaller less legible typefaces for the less important. The following designs demonstrate how detailing has been included to make the design look more coherent.

Once the layout was realised in a consistent way, the colour of print was experimented with. There is a use of red and black ink in Victorian era printing. A variety of black and red print concepts were experimented with. Again, with the concept of information hierarchy, applying the different colour to the most important information.

Many people felt that the use of red was distracting and the use of a single colour was more successful. Because of this, the poster will be printed in one colour.
