OUGD603 - Brief 01 - Events Poster, Tote Bags, Stickers & More

Alongside the guide, a series of other elements needed to be created. An events poster with all the Union's Freshers events included. The concept for this design was simple as it followed the Freshers guide, using the same grid and replicating the contents page from the guide, the design was uniform to the rest of the identity. A variety of different calendar compositions were trialled for legibility.

The posters were to be printed using risograph, and the budget only allowed for two colours which was an obstacle for design. However, the guide uses a simple colour palette of orange and black and in keeping with the identity formed through the guide, the design only needed two colours. To ensure that the calendar was visually engaging and keeping to the 'fresh' theme, a wedge shaped design that was developed from the tote bag experiments was used for the second colour of the poster. The poster had to be double sided to fit all information

The Union initially agreed that a black tote was essential to create a tote bag that stands out, and again, the budget only allowed for one colour print. A variety of initial thumbnail designs were drawn up using the fruit concept and typography. The Union preferred type based design and felt it complimented the guide. A different collection of type designs were experimented with.

The Union felt that the simple type that was outlined worked best, complimenting the logo. The design was finalised. The union decided 'fresh fresh fresh' was the most appropriate type.

To design the stickers, elements and ideas that had previously been sketched were developed into a design. There was the option to have two stickers, so the wedge shape that was developed for the events poster was used in one design with a simple black and white colour way that compliments the tote bag. The other sticker designed used a simple typographic style that is similar to some of the pages in the Freshers guide.

Banners for websites and Facebook were simple to create once the overarching identity had been established. The banner design was replicated for a larger mesh banner. This part of the design process was simple to complete, using already established design elements from the identity.
