OUGD405 - Public Information Leaflet Evaluation

After researching the Public Information videos I was intrigued by the pedal safety song. I thought it rather humorous but still informative. I know that young people often consider bike safety “uncool”, however the song that was sung in the video was stuck in my head after viewing it and it was quite enjoyable. I think that if this video was shown to young people today that they would take road safety more seriously. This song had me hooked and I wanted to include it in my leaflet, keeping high visibility as a theme. I kept the target audience, who are young people, in mind and thought about what would attract them, considering this when researching printing styles and receiving feedback on mock-ups of my design. As I wanted my leaflet to intrigue the audience and not just be cast off as another piece of junk mail, I researched my video to understand it’s theme and analysed it to identify the tone of voice, which I wanted to demonstrate through a bold and new style. The style of address in the video was what I wanted to convey. However, I feel as though I should have researched more into physical leaflets and examples of inspiration so that I produced a variety of ideas before deciding on a definitive solution. Saying this I am happy with my final result.

My design has developed strongly through feedback from my peers, which has allowed me to create an inventive design that’s different from typical public information leaflets. I am happy with how it has developed into a substantial piece of post that will survive delivery, which was only possible through receiving secondary opinions. I have really focused on obtaining feedback in this brief and I have found that it has helped improve and inform my own designs into a stronger finished piece, compared to not collaborating ideas. This has allowed me to make choices that have developed my flyer and made it different from the standard design of a public information leaflet. Because of this, I am confident that it will captivate. Many of my peers have demonstrated different examples of designs, which have helped the process of building on my own work. With my design I hope to intrigue a younger audience, and the feedback from a variety of people has helped me decide on resolutions of how best to create my final product.

I have considered innovative materials and processes when designing my product, for example the vinyl I have used which gives the envelope the quality of being a high visibility jacket, is my main appeal for the audience. I trust I have executed good craftsmanship in my design however I feel in this brief; I have been weakest in researching different processes of production. Nevertheless, I am sure that my design does hold a different innovative approach and I am using a variety of materials.

As the leaflet cannot be addressed to children directly, I trust my design of envelope would entice a child if they saw it come through their letterbox, or a parent would pick it up and be curious as to what’s inside. I have chosen to use bright and colourful stock, which prevents me from using colour ink as the material used is producing the colour for my design. I am confident that it is engaging and the visual design is clear and interactive.

In this brief the most enjoyable process was mocking up my designs and proof printing. I find that this technique of development is more effective when improving my design. I believe I prefer a physical style of working as opposed to working on something purely digitally. The envelope jacket idea has been the most successful, as the design is instantly appealing and interactive before the viewer has even opened it. It will involve the viewer because it is not a typical flyer that you would receive through the letterbox.
