After I was happy with my pictograms being clear and understandable for all audience groups, I decided to create a theme for my wayfinding system. I decided to focus on glass being a key element of the Trinity centre, because of its huge sweeping glass roof. From this I developed a simple shape that can be used with the current Trinity logo. I am confident that this design works effectively.
The current system uses a colour code for each floor which is a method which I agree works so I wanted to continue this into my own design. The current colours are basic primary colours and I feel that cooler colours would be more relaxing for a shopper and it would prevent stress which is often the case during shopping. I decided to continue the colours the current Trinity wayfinding system uses but change the tone of the colours so that they are more soothing.
The lighting on the current signage is not completely visible and doesn't light the information properly so I have decided to go for a backlit column which will help enable readability and lights the cool colours I have chosen to code each floor. The style of column below also holds the glass theme because of its backlit nature.
Using this image I have placed my designs in context and they suit the environment. This column is the style of sign I want my design to be displayed on. Below are my initial designs for the column idea.
I have organised the stores in alphabetical order and then numbered them and matched a number to the map. I found this task particularly tricky because the current system had missed out numbers and incorrectly labelled stores, however now I have organised them in a much more logical fashion.
This system is effective as it is simple and everyone will understand it and the design allows the information to be clear and eligible. I have designed two columns; a map column for each floor so it is clear which floor you are on, as this can be confusing in Trinity. The maps are labelled with the pictograms and each store is numbered clearly. I have decided to only show a map of the floor that the person is on as it is sometimes confusing which floor you are on and this will prevent that confusion.
The other columns I have designed hold information explaining which roads the exits on that floor will take you, as well as pictograms showing what is on that floor. For these columns I have illuminated an entire section to demonstrate which floor you are on so that it is clear for shoppers.
