For decades, New Zealand has debated whether or not to change it's flag design. There are many arguments for and against changing the design of the flag. One reason is its similarity of two the Australian flag and it can become confused. Also it's use of the Union flag causes confusion as it doesn't represent New Zealand as an independent sovereign nation. It's current flag only represents its British heritage and not it's Maori heritage.
However changing a nations flag would be at a huge expense and there are many nostalgic reasons behind keeping it. New Zealand has a huge history of taking part in worldwide conflicts and it would be considered disrespectful to change it. New Zealand has currently decided to keep it's flag, so far the vote is 56.6% against to 43.1% for.
If New zealand did change it's flag it would form a new national identity for itself. Not only would the country need to redesign it's flag but other aspects that would detach itself from the history of British colonisation. Bank notes are a huge part of this and many notes still hold figures such as the queen of England. To give New Zealand it's own identity I am going to design a bank note that holds it's own heritage.
The use of the fern is dominant in many of the options of new flag and is an national emblem of the country. It is commonly used in sports kit, the coat of arms and military uniform. The silver fern is a national symbol recognised by everyone.
Another national icon of New Zealand is the Kiwi, so much so people that live in New Zealand are known as Kiwis. The first symbols appeared in military uniform and before long was adopted by a number of establishments and visual items.
New Zealand is well known for its rugby team, the All Blacks. Before every match they perform the Haka, a traditional war cry of the Maori. There are many elements of New Zealand culture that is reminiscent of it's Maori culture.
The national colours of New Zealand are red black and silver. These colours are the national colours of the Maori people. The current New Zealand flag holds red whit and blue colours. The flag is dominated by the blue colour to represent the sky and sea. These four colours are the colours I would like to experiment with.
Because my bank note has to be produced using a traditional print method I have to think about which method would suit my work best. I am used to using mono printing and have used it before in my work. This method is often difficult to reproduce a design depending on the style of printing. However when using lino, it is much easier to reproduce the print as opposed to using stencils. However, this style of printing would be tricky to include more than one colour as it is difficult to line up the design. I have used this technique before however and would prefer to experiment with a method i haven't used before.
Letterpress uses a similar technique and would also be tricky to use more than one colour. It is also very limited in terms of design however the typography would be it's biggest feature.
I have never screen printed before so I want to test this method of print. I also think I could print a design that isn't limited and would be able to use a combination of typography, shape and a variety of colours.
