OUGD504 - Studio Brief 01 - Stock Research

When thinking about stock, it is important to choose one that isn't going to distract the reader from the content. Ideally, a simple off white stock will be most effective as a clean white stock can be quite unforgiving to the eye. Text sits comfortably on an off white page, and will be pleasant to read. However, if the stock is too dark or too coloured, it will have an effect on any images within the publication.

In the GF. Smith sample book, these six styles of stock are most appropriate for use in a publication. All these samples are an off white and will suit both image and text.

The three examples above are closest to white. The Soft White stock is most likely to be used in the publication as the publication will be largely imaged based, however the stock is still softer than a pure white. These stock samples will be ordered from GF Smith and used in test print to determine which stock is most appropriate.

The three examples above are too cream coloured for an image based publication however, they are suitable for text to sit on. However due to the high amount of images being used a more white stock will be more appropriate.

Stock to be used for the inside page has also been considered. These three are linked with the coffee idea, one is speckled and brown and the others are similar to wrapping and grease proof paper that would be found with certain cakes or sandwiches that cafes sell. Each of these examples will be ordered to decided which one is most appropriate for the publication.

For the front cover, a paper back cover will be the most practical, however looking into stocks, a thick paper will work best. Linking into the cafe black board theme, matt stocks and actual adhesive blackboard will be suitable for a front cover. The content of the cover is still undecided but ensuring that it is matt black will relate it to the café culture.
