OUGD504 - Studio Brief 01 - Critique

After having a good idea of what I want to create and fine pointing the details of my final idea, I critiqued my progress in a group. I felt that this crit was really successful and helped me decide on some of the details I was unsure about.

In this crit I managed to determine what size to make my publication. A couple of people brought to my attention that male and female jean pocket are different sizes and I should measure the pocket of aprons and find out the average jean pocket size. Ideally a note pad size would be more practical. I also was given the idea of finding a way of attaching it to a black board, in a form of hook, and including this in my design.

Many people felt that I should include a list of featured photos to explain where the images were taken incase anyone wanted to visit the actual cafes. They also felt I should include a piece of chalk when it is on sale commercially. I explained that I will create a series of publications on type faces in regions, because of the selection of images I have, everyone felt that this was a good idea. Many people responded by telling me to look in the Leeds Corn exchange and the german market at Christmas as well as other places with interesting black board typography such as Austria and Switzerland.

In terms of production, because I haven't been able to source any companies that produce stock out of the coffee plant or coffee beans, many people thought I could include ways of making the reading a more enjoyable experience by making it scented, to make it smell like coffee or a chalk board. This can be done by mixing coffee or chalk into the glue

It was also brought to my attention that I should make my publication durable by sealing the chalk cover with hairspray and looking into a matt lamination, if not for the entire publication then for the front cover to make it a waterproof book to resist coffee spills.

When finished with my publication many people felt I should photograph it in use in context in a café to demonstrate it being used as well as looking into distributing it and finding ways of advertising it in café magazines and online communities. As well I was advised to find a similar example my publication to decide on a price range.
