OUGD503 - Studio Brief 01 - Main brief rational

Each main substantial brief are national competitions which professionals and students take part in. To get an idea how many students on my course are taking part in each brief, all the students signed their name to the available briefs. Of my own interest, the 'Dave content' was the least popular of the choices in the whole group. Taking this into account of how interested it will be on an international scale, it will be most appropriate, and give more opportunity to take part in this brief.

In my own practice, I have discussed the use of stop motion. It is clear that any content created for Dave will be displayed on the tv channel. The go to option is to create a moving image motion picture for the channel to display. A project like stop motion will be large scale and could take days to produce. A clear timescale plan will be important in order to keep to the deadlines. The content that is produced will require a small amount of branding for it as well as fitting into Dave's tonality. This will require plenty of primary and secondary research to ensure all of the target audience is accounted for.

This brief is asking for any kind of content, allowing any style of production. Although this brief may not be considered to be graphic design, it will benefit to hone in on skills that will develop my own creative practice further. This brief will be an experience to develop skills in the creation of moving pictures. Not only this, time management skills will be important and responsibility of managing when work is to be produced and meet personal deadlines is vital.

The submission deadlines are on the 23rd of March 2017, however this brief deadline is 12th of January, allowing just 7 weeks to complete, taking into account the 3 week christmas break this leaves 4 weeks to produce the motion picture. The production a motion picture it could take up to two weeks to produce the final outcome not allowing a large amount of time to plan and prepare. This is an incredibly ambitious project that will take a lot of time management, however this will benefit my own practice getting myself into the habit of managing my own time. It is important to keep to the January deadline, as if I work over, it will distract from the next module brief.

When 'Dave' first started there was no real competition as mobile devices and on demand hadn't been established yet. Now with new technology, 'Dave' viewers are not necessarily watching the channel, which means something is needed to entice the audience and boost viewership. It will have to be something more unique than a tv show as they have a variety of shows already and if they aren't successfully bringing in enough audience, something different will have to entice.

The challenge is to create something unique. It will be important to rule out the obvious solutions and go with the most obscure solution. This thought process will help develop unique ideas and the planning process will benefit any future projects where it will be necessary to form unique ideas. The challenge is also to make something that the whole target audience will enjoy. A large amount of primary and secondary research will have to take place to ensure all of the target audience is catered for. Within the target audience, there will also be a secondary audience and the content will have to appeal to them as well. The best way to understand Dave's audience will be to send out a questionnaire to understand which humour on the channel is the most appropriate to entice the audience to watch the channel.

The brief gives several option of submission styles, either it can be a 2-3 page treatment for a longer-form TV show, for example a script of a comedy show. It will be important to expand on details like a running order or a minute-by-minute breakdown of an episode. It can be presented in a 2-3 minute taster tape, cut together from original or pre-existing footage that will demonstrate your idea, or it can be a fully finished piece of short-form which will be appropriate to run on UKTV Play. The competition runner also asks for details on ideas of talent who can be involved in the production of the concept when it is finalised for broadcast. A finished form will be best to demonstrate and stand out with effort and detail placed into the idea and will be more successful in the project.
