OUGD603 - Brief 02 - Week 1

1st December - Frivolous

The first word 'frivolous' means not having purpose or meaning, and being a bit silly, not taking itself seriously. For this, a slab-serif typeface, Beton, was chosen that is rounded and playful, representing the word. To make the word even more playful, the letter 'L' was flipped to make the two 'O's look like a face and a 'P' positioned beneath it.

2nd December - Discombobulate

The word 'discombobulate' means to confuse. Initially, the concept of making a face was experimented with however this would have been too similar to the previous day. Instead a customer question mark was positioned in place of the 'A'. It does not make the word illegible but it disconcerts the viewer.

The decision to make the logos a dark grey with a white background, or reverse that was made so that they are viewed succinctly on social media. A sans-serif typeface, Aqua Grotesque, was chosen because of how smoothly it flows, making the question mark in position of the 'A' a stronger juxtaposition.

3rd December - Stool

For this logo, a literal stool was taken into consideration. Both the 'T' which shares an imagery with a stool, and the double 'O's were converted into stool icons. Slab serif typefaces were chosen because of their structure.

However, after feedback, the custom letters were not recognisable enough as stools. The letter 'T' was customised more to represent a stool more effectively. It was fount that it didn't look right with a slab-serif, so tall thin sans-serif typefaces were trialled.

This was more effective and the stool was customised even more so it was instantly recognisable. The final typeface is Kenyan Coffee.

4th December - Slink

Similar to 'stool' the word slink was taken literally. Using a slinky, the type was converted to stairs. Using a playful sans-serif, Din Extra Bold, the type was customised to make them appear like steps. A slink illustration was developed.

This design was more positively received when pitched to others, however the type had to be edited further to appear to sit naturally.

5th December - Serene

'Serene' means peaceful, calm and tranquil. To communicate this, a thin sans-serif typeface was used and the concept of a sunset horizon was experimented with as this is an image of serenity.

The simplicity of thee word with spaced kerning and and a simple underline that is subtly curved to represent a horizon was the most successful outcome.

6th December - Infuse

To 'Infuse' means to fill or pervade. The first thought of this word is a candle infusing its smell into a room, so a flame was positioned above the 'I' and using Arial Bold, as it is frequently used in awareness signage, was appropriate.

7th December - Switch

This logo design looked at the different icon imagery of a switch, particularly the circuit symbol and the on/off symbol found on switches. Typefaces that are futuristic and communicate electricity were chosen.

Turning the 'I' into a switch was most effective, to make the design more engaging, two screws were added to each side, which is iconic of light switches. The final typeface chosen was Akashi.
