OUGD603 - Brief 06 - Secondary Research Arts Affect on the Mind

Art is also proven to have an effect on the mind, in a similar way to music. Studies have shown that viewing art produces dopamine producing the feeling of pleasure, similar to the feeling of falling in love. Positive sensations are almost immediate when viewing enjoyable or stirring artwork.

Art is known to speed medical recoveries and improve overall quality of life. Art courses are capable of reducing stress and anxiety levels as well as wellbeing, communication, focus and concentration, and level of trust and team working.

Not only does it increase emotion and reduce depression and anxiety, art has the ability to boost critical thinking skills. A study on school children visiting an art gallery showed that viewing art helped them retain information learnt from the gallery, as well as increasing tolerance and historical empathy.

Results from primary research demonstrated that many people have a similar response to certain pieces of artwork, making them feel happy, curious, balanced, scared or pain.
