OUGD406 - Secret 7 Research - Photography
Looking into various styles and designs of album covers, I have been interested in the use of photography. The first example that triggered my research was the cover for The Black Keys' Thickfreakness. This design is minimal using minimal photography of an object with a white background. It has also been edited heavily adding a grain to the image and giving it a high contrast. This all makes it visually engaging and interesting.
When looking into more styles of photography use in album covers, I have come across more minimal designs without the use of editing. These images are clear and clean and capture messages from the album through the use of connotative objects.
This example has been designed by graphic duo Tin & Ed for an album by Chet Faker. It uses manmade and natural materials to capture the themes that run throughout the album; it focuses on strength and fragility as well as a sense of time and history.
Another example, by Invisible Creature, depicts the artist's profile, structured with a collection of pillars and towers handcrafted from a variety of wood. The design creates a cityscape which forms the artist, Derek Minor's profile.
All of these designs demonstrate an engaging style of photography but with a thought process of the materials chosen to capture. I want to create designs like this and experiment greatly with the materials and specific objects I am capturing.
