OUGD504 - Studio Brief 01 - Typography Publications Research

I have looked into a variety of publications which focus on type, to give myself an idea of how to organise my information and what information I should include.

The first book I looked at was celebrating letter press, and the art of hand made type. I have looked at this publication as its topic is similar to my own. It's a large, coffee table style book with a hard back cover. The information has been organised and laid out in a way that exhibits it's images in the way that will best please the reader.

Taking advantage of the large scale of the publication, the images have been spread across the entirety of the page and full bleed has been used on some images. In some sections of the book, where large scale images have been used, small paragraphs of description have been applied in the corners of the pages.

In other areas of the publication the amount of image and type is in balance, with full columns of text paired with large and small scale images. In this example of layout there is a clear grid format being used. when planning my own publication a clear grid layout is key to creating an effective design.

This next publication looks at examples of typography in a variety of mediums. In this example, the images have been kept within a large margin from the edge of the page. The images have been positioned into a much more simple form of layout and likely, a simpler grid layout.

This publication also demonstrates an example of the typography being displayed, exhibiting the full alphabet, the concept and the contact details of the designer who designed it. This is an interesting feature and similar to how I am going to organise my content.

This next publication is purely type based and holds no images. It is simply a reference book for script types exhibiting the type in a full alphabet followed by a manifesto. I picked this publication out as chalk type is often found in a script style and it demonstrates a good example of exhibiting a type face and pairing it with a small description. This simple layout and organisation of content is where I will start when developing my own idea.

This next publication exhibits the same content but in a slightly different layout. Demonstrating the type face and giving it a description is to the point and simple. It is this style of publication that creatives will find more useful when using it as a reference.

This publication also uses examples of how the type face should be used, for example in large scale type for signage, or small scale type for a block of text. It then also demonstrates the type in an example of physical work using small images with a short caption. In a similar way, my publication will be doing the same thing but purely with image. My publication will start to become functional when it explains how each different style of chalk type will demonstrate a different tone of voice.
