OUGD504 - Studio Brief 01 - Interviews

Typographers, designers and baristas were contacted to get involved and write a few words of advice for the readers when they are creating their own type for their blackboards. A selection of creatives from a variety of backgrounds came back with a few words for the publication.

A series of questions were asked to guide each person into writing a paragraph:

What medium do you find most effective for creating black board type? Is there any particular brand of pen or chalk that you prefer to use?

Do you have any methods to make your typography last longer in certain weather such as rain or direct sunlight?

Is there a particular style of type which you find most effective?

Is there a style of type that you find least effective?

How large or small would you recommend creating type for a cafe blackboard?

Is there a simple way of ensuring that your type will remain central to a black board?

What challenges do you come across when creating type that you should bear in mind?

Stefan Kunz - A typographer from America
Chris Marks - A barista from independent Leeds coffee shop Pump and Grind
Thea Koutas - A graphic design student from Leeds
Beth Taylor - A graphic designer involved with the student union of Leeds University

Each creatives response is featured at the start as advice before the reader starts to create their own lettering.
