OUGD603 - Brief 02 - Evaluation

I chose to take part in the brief in order to develop and improve my skills in logo design. The brief on gave myself a day to create a quality logo which was a challenge. But it meant each day informed decisions for the next and I was constantly learning something new throughout the process.

For each day, using a random word, I used signifiers of words and looked at synonyms to develop a logotype. Each day, the logo was presented online. This meant I had to work quickly and be particular about finishing them and making sure they were at a high enough standard to share.

A random word was chosen for each day, adding to the challenge. This exercise was particularly on trend and lots of people were taking part, bringing an awareness to my own practice. It meant designing for a social media audience. All of the designs were logotype concepts and I would have preferred to work on more symbol and icon logos. Only having a day to work on them improved my skills significantly, working constantly for a month and being able to take forward what I’d learnt from day to day.

Looking back now, I feel the level of quality could have improved. A few of the days were a little rushed, however they were all presented professionally and appropriately. Because they were being posted on my Instagram feed they were made accessible for a social media grid using a checkerboard design and making it engaging.

This project greatly developed my ability to produce work in a small space of time, as well as developing my own vocabulary, some of the words more successful than others. I would have preferred to create more icon and symbol logos, however the project ended up being more of a logotype or typography challenge. After this brief I decided to take up any opportunity to create visual logos.
